The Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Ubud are famous for their beautiful scenes of rice paddies and their innovative irrigation system. Known as the subak, the traditional Balinese cooperative irrigation system is said to have been passed down by a revered holy man named Rsi Markandeya in the 8th century. Tegallalang forms the 3 most splendid terraced landscapes in Ubud’s shared region, with the others being in the villages of Pejeng and Campuhan.

Obscurity aside, the temple of Pura Luhur Lempuyang is one of Bali’s most important religious places: it’s one of the six sad kahyangan (“temples of the world”) dedicated to Sang Hyang Widi Wasa (the supreme God), and it’s also one of the island’s nine directional temples that “protects” the native Balinese from evil spirits. The temple presents an interesting challenge to visitors: reaching the top means conquering 1,700 steps cut into mountainside jungle, requiring about an hour and a half of serious climbing. Ordinary Balinese make their way up the stairs to ask for divine assistance with problems or request blessings from above.

The USS Liberty Wreck is the most famous dive site in Bali. It is also one of the best sunken ship wrecks in the world! When I arrive in Bali, I absolutely have to dive here! The liberty ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo then was beached near Tulamben. In 1963, the eruption of Mount Agung caused the vessel to slip off the beach, and it now lies on a sand slope in 9 to 30 m of water. The wreck is about 130 m long with the shallowest part at about 5 m deep and the deepest on the other side of the wreck at about 30 m deep. Stan (Padi Advance Open Water Diver) and Christine (Padi Open Water Diver) are both grateful to Scubaddiction Dive School for imparting the skills needed to pass the Padi certifications so they can explore the oceans of the world.
If the idea of a floating breakfast seems silly, know that Bali is extremely hot and humid. Being able to cool off in our villa pool while sipping coffee and nibbling on a delicious breakfast doesn’t seem half bad if it means we get to escape the heat. Floating breakfasts are also an awesome way to pamper ourselves. I highly recommend experiencing this at least once if you’re planning a trip to Bali, Indonesia.
